Assam BJP MLA Defends Proposed Uniform Civil Code

Guwahati: Assam BJP MLA Sushanta Borgohain has defended the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code, describing the legislation as the fulfillment of a key electoral promise. Speaking on May 25, Borgohain noted that the ruling party had pledged to bring the code to the Assembly during its first session if re-elected, a goal he says the Chief Minister has now moved forward.

Borgohain emphasized that Assam is a diverse state with many different religions and communities. He argued that a common legal framework is necessary to ensure the security of the population and create a more equitable society. According to the legislator, the code will provide consistent legal protections and prevent injustice in personal family matters.

The MLA also addressed the resistance expected from opposition parties. He alleged that the opposition is biased against the move due to the background of their lawmakers and their stance on practices like triple talaq. Borgohain claimed that the new law would specifically benefit women by preventing the kinds of injustices associated with such practices.
