Guwahati: The Assam government has formally backed a proposal to reserve one-third of seats for women in Parliament and state legislatures. Women and Child Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog introduced the resolution during the third day of the new Assembly session on May 25, securing unanimous approval from the House.

The resolution calls for the policy to take effect immediately once the ongoing delimitation exercise concludes. Supporters hope this move will foster holistic development and strengthen the role of women in the political landscape. Minister Neog noted that while women hold a position of respect in society, they still lack sufficient political influence due to various social and educational barriers.

Highlighting the broader political context, Neog pointed to the central government's legislative efforts to increase female participation. She also mentioned that several other NDA-ruled states have adopted similar resolutions to promote gender equality. Celebrating local progress, she pointed out that Assam recently elected its fifth woman MLA as a sign of positive change in public representation.
