Guwahati: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has sharply criticized the Uniform Civil Code Bill recently introduced in the Assam Assembly. He described the legislation as a backdoor attempt to impose Hindu laws on Muslims regarding inheritance, succession, and divorce. Owaisi argued that the bill ignores Islamic practices, which specifically protect a daughter's right to property, and allows for wills that could potentially exclude female heirs.

The Assam government introduced the bill on Monday to modernize laws related to marriage, divorce, and property distribution. Key provisions include a ban on polygamy, mandatory registration for marriages and divorces, and new legal requirements for live-in relationships. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that these reforms aim to create fairness and equality within the legal system.

While the legislation explicitly exempts tribal communities from its scope, Owaisi questioned the inconsistency of this approach. He argued that the bill fails to be truly uniform or inclusive by protecting tribal autonomy while enforcing specific rules on other groups. He further contended that the original framers of the Constitution never intended for a mandatory Uniform Civil Code to be imposed in this manner.
