Activist slams Manipur Chief Minister over funeral wreath controversy

Imphal: Social activist Malem Thongam blasted Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh for honoring a flag linked to separatist demands. The incident happened at the funeral of former Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte in Churachandpur. Thongam claims the flag represents Kuki militant groups seeking a separate administration outside Manipur.

The activist argues the Chief Minister endorsed these separatist goals through his public gesture. He called the act a direct insult to the state. "Describing the gesture as an affront to the unity and territorial integrity of the state, Malem said it had deeply hurt the sentiments of people committed to preserving Manipur’s territorial integrity."

Thongam also questioned the state government regarding current security claims. The Chief Minister flew to the funeral by helicopter instead of driving the highway. This proves the government cannot guarantee safe travel for regular citizens. He demanded the immediate release of detained members from groups like Arambai Tenggol and Village Volunteers, while insisting the state drop all current allegations against them.
