Achik State Peoples’ Front Demands Stricter Food Safety Checks at Assam Border

Shillong: The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has formally requested that the Meghalaya government halt food imports from Assam until all items undergo rigorous safety testing. The group expressed concern over the potential health risks posed by chemically treated produce and livestock entering the Garo Hills region.

In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the ASPF highlighted reports of hazardous artificial chemicals detected in fruits and vegetables sourced from Barpeta and Guwahati. Since the Garo Hills relies heavily on these imports for staples like broiler chickens, cattle, and fresh produce, the group argued that current oversight is insufficient to protect public health.

“We urge the state government to prioritise safety and implement strict measures for all goods entering Garo Hills from Assam until a safe consumption certificate is issued by the Government of Meghalaya,” said ASPF general secretary Bernita Marak.

This appeal marks the third time the organization has petitioned the government regarding the safety of the food supply chain. The ASPF is calling for the immediate deployment of food safety and veterinary personnel to key entry points including Bajengdoba, Dainadubi, and the AMPT road. Additionally, the group proposed the establishment of dedicated food testing laboratories in every Garo Hills district to facilitate regular market inspections and ensure all products are fit for consumption.
