Wild Elephant Kills Woman During Nighttime Water Run in Assam

Guwahati: A wild elephant killed a woman in Assam's West Karbi Anglong district late Sunday night. The beast attacked a group of villagers near a Public Health Engineering facility. The victim, Namika Sangma, died on the spot. She was the wife of Krishna Rajbhar and lived in Bor Matikhola village.

The group of women walked toward the Kheroni-Kapili river around 11 pm to collect water for Bol Bam rituals. The other women escaped unharmed. Officials from the Kheroni Police Station and Southern Forest Range confirmed the details of the attack. Fear grips the locals now.

First responders moved her body to Kheroni Model Hospital. Doctors sent the remains to Diphu Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Residents say these incidents are becoming a regular threat. The ongoing human-elephant conflict continues to plague those living near forest boundaries as one local noted, "The incident has triggered fear among villagers, with locals expressing concern over the increasing movement of elephants near human settlements."
