West Khasi Hills Police Arrest Man After Viral Assault Video

Shillong: West Khasi Hills police arrested 23-year-old Fasdingson Wanniang on Monday morning. The arrest followed a viral video showing him attacking his 22-year-old estranged wife. The couple had lived apart for over a year. The assault happened on June 28 along the Nongstoin Bypass Road.

No one reported the crime at first. Police opened a case on their own after the footage hit social media. Officers from Nongstoin Police Station tracked down the suspect in Mawkadiang village with help from local defense groups.

Superintendent of Police Herbert Kharkongor confirmed the arrest and the identification of witnesses. "During the course of investigation, and based on source information, the accused involved in committing the act was identified. Other persons seen in the video were examined and found to be key witnesses present at the place of occurrence," Kharkongor said.

The victim is now getting help at a One Stop Centre in Nongstoin. Police are providing counseling and support services to her. Officials also warned the public to stop sharing the clip. Spreading the footage creates legal trouble under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. Authorities want the public to report tips to the control room or call 112 instead of fueling the viral post.
