Shillong: A string of thefts has gripped Meghalaya over the past week. Criminals are hitting homes, construction sites, and public utility stations. The losses already total several lakhs of rupees. Police are investigating incidents across East Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, and Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Motorcycle thieves are especially active. Five bikes were reported stolen from locations including Police Bazar and Magurmari Ferry Ghat between June 19 and June 23. Mobile phones, construction supplies, and even livestock are disappearing too. Danseng R. Marak lost five head of cattle from his farm, though police later recovered three.
Public infrastructure is taking a massive hit. Thieves stripped 125 metres of cable from a CCTV network in Nongthymmai. At the Chibinang ARR Hydromet station, criminals walked away with solar panels and batteries valued at one lakh rupees. Twenty batteries were also taken from a school in Bholarbhita.
Some citizens are fighting back. On June 22, staff at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly caught a man trying to strip electrical wires from the Secretariat. Robert Nongrum confirmed the incident. Regarding the broader crime wave, officials stated, "Police have registered cases in the respective incidents and investigations are under way to trace the accused and recover the stolen property."
