Villagers Save Python from Death in Arunachal Pradesh

Itanagar: Villagers in Arunachal Pradesh saved a python from certain death this week. The snake was spotted near Silluk village in the Mebo subdivision. Kepang Nong Borang, chairman of the Silluk Swachh Abhiyan, stepped in to cage the animal instead of letting it be destroyed. The rescue became a priority after local youths killed a similar snake in the same area just one day later.

Borang worked with the Borguli Wildlife Range to coordinate the move. He insisted that releasing the snake near the village would only put it back in danger. Officials transported the python to the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary. The release took place with East Siang honorary wildlife warden M Tayeng and local forest staff standing by. Opung Borang, chair of the Silluk Village-II Gram Panchayat, joined the team for the release.

The group fears more snakes are hiding nearby. Opung Borang believes the mother of the rescued python might still be lurking in the area. She issued a direct appeal to the community regarding future sightings. "She urged villagers to inform her or Kepang Nong Borang when they spot a python instead of attempting to kill or capture it themselves," according to reports. Residents are now committed to relocating any other snakes they find.

This is not the first time the village has stepped up for wildlife. The Silluk Swachh Abhiyan team previously rescued and relocated two Chinese pangolins in 2023 and 2024. Local leaders are now pushing the State Forest and Wildlife Department for better gear. They want rescue cages, medical supplies, and equipment to keep these operations safe. Sanctuary officials praised the move and hope it sets an example for young people to protect local species rather than fear them.
