Agartala: Tribal chieftains across Tripura hit the brakes on a planned protest Tuesday. They pushed their meeting with state government officials and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) to July 27. The delay follows the death of the state Director General of Police, prompting an official period of mourning.
A spokesperson for the Customary Law Committee confirmed the change in schedule. "The chieftains of various tribal communities have gathered here. We had planned to submit separate deputations to the TTAADC administration and the state government. However, in honour of the DGP and the state mourning, we have decided to postpone the programme," the representative said.
The group demands the urgent codification of tribal customary laws. Only the Jamatia community has successfully codified its laws to date. Roughly 18 other bills sit in limbo, waiting for the Governor to sign off. The committee plans to deliver formal requests to the Chief Minister and the TTAADC Chief Executive Member when they reconvene in late July.
