Agartala: Tripura voters finally head to the polls on September 28. The State Election Commission set the date for 587 Village Committees within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. Counting starts at 7:00 AM on October 5.
The term for these committees expired back on March 8, 2021. COVID-19 and legal hurdles stopped previous attempts to hold the vote. State Election Commissioner Dr. P. K. Chakraborty confirmed the delay. The full electoral cycle wraps up by October 8.
Official notification lands September 1. Candidates have until September 8 to file papers between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Scrutiny happens September 9, with a withdrawal deadline of September 11. If any polling station requires a do-over, re-polling is slated for October 3.
The election covers 2,634 constituencies and 4,597 seats. Exactly 9,61,977 people can vote. The rolls include 4,82,041 men, 4,79,930 women, and six third-gender voters. Authorities identified 1,550 polling stations. Voters use ballot boxes between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
The Commission deployed heavy administrative support. Eight District Magistrates serve as Election Officers. They lead 52 BDOs acting as Registration Officers, plus 231 Assistant Returning Officers and 373 Sector Officers. Around 8,500 personnel will manage the sites. The Model Code of Conduct is now active across the area.
Security remains the primary focus. The Commission coordinated with police to keep polling stations safe. Regarding the planning, Dr. Chakraborty stated, "Taking into consideration all relevant factors like Board examination, major festivals, prevailing law and order situation etc., the State Election Commission of Tripura has decided the schedule." Counting centres will operate at Block Headquarters or other designated spots.
