Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wants to clean up Meghalaya's Autonomous District Councils. He met with officials from Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills on Monday to move ahead with a modernization push. These councils agreed to overhaul their financial books and digitize daily operations.
Sangma says the changes will clear up bottlenecks. He wants faster tax collection and better service for local residents. The government is pushing for strict rules on how these bodies handle cash and administrative work. "We expect these reforms to bring about significant improvements in the functioning of the District Councils and enhance service delivery for the people," Sangma stated.
But not everyone is playing ball. The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) slammed the door on the proposal. The state wanted to install a sub-committee to manage salary delays and oversight.
Seiborlang Warbah, the KHADC executive member for finance, rejected the plan. He admitted the council faces tight budgets but insisted they are not in an acute financial crisis. The KHADC remains firm in its decision to keep outside interference out of their house.
