Imphal: Siddharth Mridul, former Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, submitted his nomination papers on August 6 for the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association. He entered the race accompanied by a group of supporters. The polls are set for August 18.
Mridul brings a long history to the contest. He took his oath in Manipur on October 20, 2023, and retired on November 21, 2024. Before that post, he served as a Delhi High Court judge starting in May 2009. He returned to practice as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court after leaving the bench.
Senior advocate Anupam Lal Das also filed his papers to run for the top spot. His bid is backed by senior advocates Shekhar Naphade and Ratnakar Dash. The SCBA represents lawyers practicing before the nation's highest court.
"The elected team is responsible for managing the association’s affairs and advancing the interests of its members," according to the organization. Members will vote for a president, vice-presidents, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, and executive committee members during the annual event. These elections hold significant weight within the legal community.
