Shillong and Ri-Bhoi mobilize to fight drug abuse

Shillong: Sanker marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Saturday with a bike rally across Shillong. The event pushed for early intervention to stop addiction. In-patients performed music, showcasing their recovery journey. Several people earned recognition for maintaining long-term sobriety.

Sanker Director Dr. Sandi Syiem urged families and government agencies to step up. He said tackling the drug menace requires active participation from all. Dr. D. Khonglah explained how chemicals alter brain function and influence behavior. She warned that trafficking networks now use the dark web to reach users. Prevention must start at home by teaching children self-control.

Ri-Bhoi hosted a youth campaign at Tamulkuchi Darbar Hall to address the rising threat of substances. MY Bharat partnered with local groups to distribute sports gear to eight youth clubs. Himanta Timung, convener of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, told the crowd: "Awareness and community participation are the most effective tools to combat addiction."

Mary Synrem of DISHA detailed the risks of HIV and AIDS linked to drug use. Participants took the Nasha Mukt Bharat pledge to live a drug-free life. Organizers awarded prizes for anti-drug posters and quizzes to encourage local youth to stay clean. The message remained firm throughout the day: Say no to drugs and choose life.
