Guwahati: Hundreds of residents paralyzed the Nagaon-Morigaon State Highway on Wednesday, July 29, to fight a proposed administrative shakeup. Protesters burned tires across the road in Dandua, Morigaon district. Traffic stopped cold. Long lines of vehicles backed up for miles, trapping commuters in the heat.
The demonstrators, consisting of men, women, and youths, hit the streets to block the shifting of Nij Dandua, Bonpara, Sapkati, and nearby areas from the Morigaon Revenue Circle to the Mikirbheta Revenue Circle. They claim the government never consulted them. Locals shouted slogans against MLA Ramakanta Deuri and accused him of ignoring their interests.
"They would continue their agitation if the proposed transfer was not revoked," the crowd declared. The residents demanded the government drop the plan entirely. They refuse to move to the Mikirbheta jurisdiction.
The Morigaon Superintendent of Police arrived with a heavy force to keep the peace. Officers worked to clear the road and talk the group down. Protesters stand firm. They vow to keep fighting until officials keep the villages under the current revenue circle.
