Guwahati: Hundreds of residents paralyzed the Nagaon-Morigaon State Highway in Assam on Wednesday, July 29. Protesters burned tyres in the Dandua area of Morigaon district. Traffic stopped cold. Long queues of stranded vehicles formed on both sides of the road.
The demonstration stems from a government plan to shift several villages from the Morigaon Revenue Circle to the Mikirbheta Revenue Circle. Affected areas include Nij Dandua, Bonpara, Sapkati, and nearby locations. Residents claim the government bypassed them entirely. They stated that they were "neither consulted nor informed adequately before the proposal was initiated."
Angry locals targeted MLA Ramakanta Deuri during the rally. They blamed him for failing to represent their interests regarding the administrative shake-up. The crowd demanded that the state scrap the move and keep their villages under the existing Morigaon Revenue Circle.
Morigaon police arrived in force. The Superintendent of Police led a large contingent to the site to keep the peace. Senior officers entered talks with the protesters to clear the lanes and restore order. The blockade remains a high-stakes standoff. Locals vowed to keep fighting, stating they will not permit the transfer to Mikirbheta under any circumstances.
