Guwahati: Madhur Jya Sonowal vanished from the Aluva Sub Jail on August 24. The 28-year-old prisoner from Dhemaji, Assam, slipped past guards during an evening break. He is gone. Jail staff let inmates out of their cells at 4 pm to roam the prison compound for 30 minutes. When Sonowal failed to return by 4.30 pm, guards searched the grounds.
They found nothing. The Prison Department filed a formal complaint, leading Aluva police to open a case and launch a wide investigation. Officers are now questioning locals living and working near the facility to see if anyone spotted the escapee. Police recently arrested Sonowal for a mobile phone theft in the Edathala police station area. He had only been in judicial custody since Sunday. A local official stated, "Aluva police registered a case and began an investigation."
