Kohima: District Magistrate Hiazu Meru issued a new protocol this July to clear unauthorized vehicles from National Highway 129A. The move aligns with a Supreme Court order from April 13, 2026, and the Control of National Highways Act, 2002. Officials want clear roads. The order sets up a multi-layered team to coordinate between the District Administration, the State Police, the Transport Department, and road agencies like NHIDCL and PWD.
This enforcement covers a specific stretch of NH 129A, running from KM 109.494 to KM 173.850. The team includes the Additional Deputy Commissioners of Peren and Jalukie, the Additional Superintendent of Police, the Regional Transport Officer, and several other administrative and engineering leads. These teams must capture GPS-stamped photos of any illegal parking found on the carriageway or road shoulder.
Agencies will issue a formal notice demanding removal within seven days. If a driver ignores this, the police and district officials will take charge. Towing begins now. Machinery and cranes from road agencies will move the vehicles to designated spots under police supervision. The district requires recovery cranes to sit at intervals no greater than 75 km to keep the routes moving.
The system forces digital accountability for every violation. Patrolling units must send all collected evidence to a Designated Police Officer for processing, as "no manual challans shall be issued on the spot by patrolling units to ensure a centralised and transparent digital record." Officials also plan to set up an Advance Traffic Management System that uses video cameras to detect violations automatically.
The District Highway Safety Task Force will review all enforcement outcomes during monthly meetings. This plan seeks to stop road blockages before they happen.
