Shillong: Opposition members in the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) confronted the Chief Executive Member on Monday. They want cash. The group includes eight MDCs from the VPP and two from the Congress party. They argue the current payout of the 16th Finance Commission grant is lopsided.
The council sanctioned 28.5 crore rupees for development. Ruling MDCs secured roughly 1.36 crore rupees each. Meanwhile, the ten opposition members received only 20 lakh rupees apiece. The disparity is massive.
Opposition members called the allocation an “insult” to their constituents. They are not asking for an even split with the treasury benches. Instead, they want a proportionate distribution of the central funds. The group pointed to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, where the ruling VPP distributed money equally among all 29 members.
The opposition bloc now demands that their individual share climb to 50 lakh rupees. They asked the Executive Committee for a written response by August 4. The council members warned that they will take further action if this “step-motherly treatment” continues.
