New Kanglei Lingo App Aims to Save Manipuri Language

Imphal: The Kanglei Lingo Group of Compilation and Communication launched a mobile app called Kanglei Lingo today. It aims to document and promote the Manipuri language. The group hosted the public rollout at the Mayaai Loishang in Kangleipak with the organization ICHAL. P. Puthiba Mangang, an adviser at ICHAL, attended the event while group president Bidyananda Moirangcha presented the software.

The creators fear that relying on English weakens the local tongue. Many people now struggle to find basic Manipuri terms for common words. This digital tool fights that trend. The group stated, "preserving and developing the mother tongue is essential to protecting the identity of the people and ensuring its transmission to future generations, particularly amid rapid technological advancement and the growing influence of artificial intelligence."

The app remains a work in progress. Its developers admitted the first version contains errors and gaps. They want the public to send in corrections and new words to improve later updates. Saving the language helps keep local identity alive.
