NEHU Tura campus strike hits third week over pay disputes

Shillong: The strike at the NEHU Tura campus drags into its third week. Staff remain at a standstill. The Tura Campus Staff Welfare Association launched their pen-down protest on June 16 to demand fair wages. They want the university to finally follow the Department of Personnel and Training order on equal pay for equal work.

Association President Tangseng G. Momin said the institution has dodged this responsibility for years. "We have requested NEHU authorities for years to ensure parity through the implementation of the DoPT order," Momin said. The university claims budget issues, but the staff says the law does not care about tight pockets.

The association alleges the administration is punishing workers. They claim management demoted staff and withheld gratuity payments from retirees, violating rules that require payment within 30 days. Employees also face issues with missing EPF benefits.

The union is now questioning the involvement of the Civil Defense Administration. They want to know if that group is even legally allowed to act as an outsourcing firm. The strike shows no signs of breaking as the administration continues to ignore these grievances.
