Kohima: Nagaland officials have launched a new three-tier committee system to fight drug abuse. The state government issued the directive on July 21 to enforce the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction and the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. These teams will drive policy, monitor progress, and handle rehabilitation across the state.
The Department of Social Welfare stated the mission is to "strengthen coordination, monitoring and implementation of drug demand reduction initiatives at the State, district and block levels."
The Chief Secretary leads the State Level Steering and Monitoring Committee. This group includes the Home Commissioner plus secretaries from Health, Rural Development, Education, and several other departments. Three NGOs, the Ark Foundation, Youth Mission, and Kripa Foundation, hold seats on the board. This top tier meets once every quarter.
Deputy Commissioners oversee the district level. These units bring together the Superintendent of Police, the District Legal Services Authority, and the Medical Superintendent to synchronize local efforts. They meet every month alongside two local NGOs. At the base, Block Development Officers lead committees composed of school heads, youth leaders, Self Help Groups, and health workers like ASHA and Anganwadi staff. These block teams also meet on a monthly basis.
