Kohima: Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir wants passenger trains back on the tracks. He pushed the Ministry of Railways to revive the link to Tuli during a session under Rule 377. Better connectivity matters. Jamir requested a service complete with a parcel van running between Dimapur and Tuli to help daily commuters, students, and traders.
The current infrastructure sits underutilized. The line operated on a metre gauge starting in the 1990s and moved to a broad gauge in 2000. Workers finished a successful passenger trial run between Tuli and Mariani in 2007. The trains never started running for the public. Jamir also urged officials to extend broad gauge services from Guwahati to Tuli to bridge the gap between Nagaland and Upper Assam.
Money talks. The existing goods train service between Amguri and Tuli hauled in nearly 30 crore rupees in revenue during the previous financial year. Jamir pointed to these earnings to prove the route is commercially viable. He told the House: "Restoring the service would improve regional connectivity and support economic activity in the area." He promised full public backing for the project and demanded immediate action to get the trains moving.
