Kohima: The Naga Students Federation wants the Avakhung Check Gate gone. Tensions spiked after the Assam Rifles stopped an NSF delegation on September 19. The team was heading to Tsera in the Naga Self Administered Zone for a cultural exchange. They wanted to register for a border pass. The Company Commander at Avakhung refused to speak with them. He blocked them from even starting the process.
The delegation had arrived at Lütsam village on September 18. They spoke with the Phokhungri Area Public Organization first. Locals told them about constant harassment at the border. The NSF delegation followed protocol by bringing a reference from a public group. It did not matter. The soldiers turned them away at the gate. The federation notes that the lack of a pass is not the issue. The soldiers stopped the registration itself.
The NSF highlighted broader issues with the Assam Rifles. They claim the post blocks sick people from reaching hospitals. "The inability to produce a Border Pass could not be viewed in isolation, as the registration process itself was not allowed to proceed," the federation stated. They accuse soldiers of wearing civilian clothes to spy on villagers. Local trade and farm sales are suffering. The security forces also occupy the International Trade Centre, a state government building.
The NSF wants the post moved out of civilian areas. They demand proof of the legal authority behind the gate. They want a guarantee that medical transit stays open. Security forces must quit watching villagers. The federation insists that security work in Nagaland needs coordination with state police. The military occupation of state property must stop now.
