Kohima: The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) wants the Avakhung Check Gate gone. They also demand the immediate withdrawal of the Assam Rifles outpost from civilian areas. The group claims these security measures strangle livelihoods and stop ordinary movement. On September 24, the NSF demanded the Ministry of Defence disclose the legal authority behind the outpost and the check gate.
Reports suggest sick villagers cannot reach hospitals. The Federation demands guarantees that medical emergencies will not face obstruction. They also want a hard stop to what they call “house-to-house questioning of villagers” and an end to surveillance and harassment. Local trade and the transport of agricultural goods must remain unhindered, according to the group.
Tensions spiked after a September 19 incident. An NSF delegation headed to Tsera for a cultural exchange was blocked at the Avakhung Check Gate. They held talks with the Phokhungri Area Public Organization on September 18 before attempting to pass. Although they sought an audience with the Company Commander to sort out registration and Border Pass requirements, the officer refused to meet them.
The Federation also demands clarity on who controls the International Trade Centre. They report that state government properties belonging to the Departments of Health and Family Welfare, Industries and Commerce, and Transport are now restricted. Residents cannot access these areas.
The NSF stated the government must “stay away from the Naga way of life” and stop interfering in local movement. They maintain that any security presence in Nagaland must coordinate directly with the state government and local police. The group claims they will keep fighting for transparent governance through peaceful, democratic means.
