Aizawl: Train travel to Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and southern Assam is paralyzed. Heavy monsoon rains destroyed tracks on the Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section near New Harangajao station in Assam. The ground collapsed under two of three lines for 300 metres. Tracks are wrecked.
Northeast Frontier Railway officials confirmed the mess on Thursday. Crews are working on a war footing. Constant rain and bad weather are hammering the repair progress. The section serves as the only rail corridor linking these states to the rest of the country.
Railway staff are using the third line with strict safety rules. They banned all night passenger movement between 7 pm and 5 am. Trains run at slow speeds during the day. "Restoration work is being carried out on a war footing," said an NFR official.
The disruption forced the cancellation of the Guwahati-Silchar Express for Thursday and Friday. Other trains face delays or partial cancellations. The blockade hampers the flow of foodgrains, fuel, and construction supplies. These hill tracks in Dima Hasao suffer frequent damage from landslides and flooding between June and September.
