Aizawl: Mizoram officials are negotiating with the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd to build a state oil depot. Discussions began Friday, August 28. IOCL is still scouting locations and has not made a final call yet.
The state wants to resume oil and natural gas exploration. Focus centers on the Meidum area inside Kolasib district. Teams are assessing if the area holds enough gas to make extraction profitable. Drilling is planned for Hortoki, located near Meidum. Preparatory work is done.
The Public Works Department built a bridge over the Chhimluang river in 2025. This structure connects Meidum and Hortoki, granting clear access to the drill site. The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation is now asking the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons for a contract extension. They need this under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to sink a new well.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma is leaning on the Centre to move faster. He sent a letter demanding the work start immediately. Regarding the progress, officials noted: "A bridge over the Chhimluang river connecting Meidum with Hortoki was completed by the state Public Works Department in 2025, facilitating access to the proposed drilling site."
