Aizawl: The Mizoram government launched the distribution of land passes for 1,217 residential plots in Chekbawk on September 28. Revenue Minister B Lalchhanzova handed the official documents to 319 landowners during the first phase of the rollout. He urged locals to avoid politicizing the land settlement process. The government aims to resolve long-standing issues quickly. "The government was working to complete pending processes and address issues that had remained unresolved for years," Lalchhanzova said.

Planning for Chekbawk dates back to 1997. Officials drafted initial house-site plans with 305 plots, then expanded the scope in 2002 and 2009. Disputes forced the state to launch a comprehensive re-survey. This work ran from October 5, 2021, to September 30, 2022. The final design covers 107.651 hectares and includes 1,369 plots total, split into 1,352 private lots and 17 public sites.

The current plan carves out 13.90 kilometers for internal roads. It also designates specific zones for markets, cemeteries, schools, and green spaces. Authorities issued Land Settlement Certificates in 2023-24, but halted the process due to resident complaints. A fact-finding committee investigated the grievances before the state lifted the freeze. Officials confirmed they will distribute the remaining passes in future phases. Meanwhile, the government expects to announce resolutions for land issues in the Ramhlun Sports Complex and Zemabawk High School Veng areas later this week.
