Meghalaya turns anti-drug mission into public movement

Shillong: Meghalaya is shifting its approach to drug control. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission, known as DREAM, has successfully moved past state bureaucracy to become a broad public movement. The initiative now links schools, local groups, and private citizens to stop isolated efforts. Sangma noted that hitting the problem hard requires total community buy-in.

Addiction is broad. It is not just about substances anymore. The Chief Minister warned that people increasingly struggle with phone and screen habits. "The DREAM mission has helped coordinate the efforts of various stakeholders who were previously working independently," he stated during the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event in Shillong.

A new facility dubbed the Centre of Evolution opened its doors at Reid Provincial Chest Hospital on Friday. It will offer therapy, counseling, and long-term care for residents. The state also signed a deal with SEWA Inland to boost rehabilitation work. Officials handed out awards to community leaders and launched a digital tracking portal for recoveries. The event ended with the Chief Minister leading the crowd in an anti-drug pledge.
