Shillong: Meghalaya is drafting an updated IT and ITeS policy to pull in more tech investment. Commissioner and Secretary of the IT and C Department Pravin Bakshi said the state is prioritizing artificial intelligence and global capability centres. The government wants to offer custom incentives for firms committing over 100 crore rupees.

Bakshi discussed the plan at the Nasscom BPM Confluence 2026. He noted the state must improve conditions to compete with hubs like Bengaluru and Visakhapatnam. "There is a reason why these GCCs are landing up in Vizag or in Bangalore. There is still some ground to cover," Bakshi said. Officials already held initial talks with US fintech firm CodePay regarding a potential GCC in the state.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recently opened Shillong Tech Park-II in Umsawli. The project cost 121 crore rupees and provides 1.8 lakh square feet of space. The Centre also chipped in 18 crore rupees for an AI Centre of Excellence at the site. This 10,000-square-foot facility should open within two months. It will target healthcare, education, and governance.

Meghalaya also wants its local workforce ready for regional growth. The state is creating training modules to help youth find jobs at the Tata Electronics semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Assam. Officials hope this effort helps local workers tap into the shifting tech market.
