Shillong: Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla threw his weight behind the Meghalaya Cricket Association on Sunday. The organization recently fired and issued a lifetime ban to the manager and coach of the Under-23 women’s team. These men face serious sexual harassment allegations from players. The ax fell after the Meghalaya State Commission for Women probed the claims.
The association also suspended Honorary Secretary Rayonald Kharkamni. Officials believe he helped cover up the misconduct. A retired High Court judge acting as the MCA Ombudsman will now handle his case. The government stands by the disciplinary path taken by the cricket body.
"We as a government respect the decision… due diligence has been done. In my point of view, they have done their part, and the decision taken is based on their findings," Shylla said. The minister noted the government stayed out of the initial investigation.
The state commission issued a scathing order on June 26. It determined that team officials ignored written complaints from players dating back to December 2025. The panel slammed the MCA for failing to protect the athletes or start an inquiry when the harassment first surfaced.
