Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court fired back at state investigators on Monday. Judges Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Wanlura Diengdoh slammed the pace of the probe into the August 19 city riots. Police have rounded up some office-bearers, but the trail has gone cold. No other suspects are in cuffs.
Advocate General Amit Kumar presented a status report to the Division Bench. He confirmed that the state set up a Special Investigation Team to speed up the work. The court remains unimpressed. “It is noticed that the investigation is going on, but apart from arrest of the office-bearers, there has been no further arrest made of the persons connected with the incidents,” the judges noted.
The violence hit close to home. Attackers targeted two High Court vehicles carrying officers. A driver and a Personal Security Officer were among those assaulted. The Bench also highlighted the attack on a public transport bus.
Justice Thangkhiew and Justice Diengdoh ordered the state to hand over case diaries for serial numbers 7 and 8. Every case from the riot demands urgent attention. The court set September 1 as the deadline for a new status report. This follows the suo-motu PIL 16 of 2026 filed by the Registrar General against the State of Meghalaya.
