Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court cleared Ashim Sinha of murder on June 29. He walked free. A division bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh tossed out the life sentence handed down in an August 2023 Shillong court ruling.

Sinha spent years locked up for the 2015 killing of a woman. The trial judge originally slammed him with a life term and a 50,000 rupee fine under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Sinha appealed that decision, forcing a closer look at the state's case.

Judges found the prosecution's story full of holes. The court ruled that investigators failed to connect the dots, stating that the "prosecution had failed to establish a complete chain of circumstantial evidence" to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The bench gave Sinha the benefit of the doubt and ordered his immediate acquittal.
