Meghalaya Government Heads to Supreme Court After Bail Ruling

Shillong: The Meghalaya government plans to take the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case to the Supreme Court. This move follows a defeat in the High Court of Meghalaya on Monday. Justice Wanlura Diengdoh dismissed the state's petition to cancel bail for suspect Sonam Raghuvanshi.

The state tried to use Section 482 of the CrPC to flip the lower court decision. It failed. The High Court rejected the plea despite a detailed order still pending. Justice Diengdoh stood by the initial ruling.

The Shillong Sessions Court granted the original bail after finding major holes in the police work. Investigators failed to follow basic rules. They did not inform the suspect of her arrest grounds as required by the Constitution. "The court observed that the police failed to properly inform her of the grounds of arrest as required under Article 22 of the Constitution."

State prosecutors now look to the apex court to intervene. They want the bail gone.
