Meghalaya Coal Mining Future Depends on Delhi

Shillong: Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla says the federal government in Delhi now holds the key to restarting coal mining in Meghalaya. State leaders plan to meet the Prime Minister and the Union Coal Ministry to push for rule changes that better fit local needs.

Current laws only allow mining on plots larger than 100 hectares. Jaintia Hills miners hate this restriction. Open-cast mining failed here, so the state is now hunting for other scientific methods that actually work on the ground.

Shylla claims the United Democratic Party remains steady despite rumors of an internal rift. He insists the group has a clear path forward for upcoming elections. "The party has its own plans and strategy," Shylla said. If members jump ship, he claims the party will simply find new people to take their spots.
