Shillong: Shillong hosted international delegates, experts, and policymakers at the State Convention Hall on Friday. The International Conference on Women Farmers and Sustainable Organic Agriculture turned the spotlight on indigenous farming traditions. The Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare department teamed up with IFOAM-Organics Asia to run the event.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma told the crowd that the state keeps women at the heart of its farming plans. He noted that the state’s matrilineal system strengthens their role as stewards of the soil. He added, "Meghalaya has placed farmers, particularly women, at the centre of its agricultural policies."
Tourism Minister Timothy D Shira claimed the gathering proves the state wants to lead the organic pack. He pointed to the event as a way to show off local strengths to a global audience. The talks focused on better teamwork between governments, local communities, and development partners to protect natural heritage.
An exhibition floor displayed the state’s organic tea, spices, and fresh vegetables. One item caught eyes: an eco-friendly toothbrush crafted from wood and natural fibers. It served as a clear sign of the state's drive toward sustainable, earth-friendly manufacturing.
