Shillong: Employees at the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited have had enough. The Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL Employees Associations and Unions set a November 30 deadline for management to fix hiring gaps and give long-term staff permanent status. Workers gathered at the Lumjingshai headquarters on Friday to demand action.
Staff frustration is hitting a boiling point across the state, including the Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills. Many contractual employees have spent 15 to 23 years in limbo. Arju Dkhar, an adviser to the committee, says the bureaucracy is failing the workforce. "The regularisation process has started, but it is moving very slowly. We need to put pressure on the management to act, as the reasons for the delay remain unclear," Dkhar said.
The corporation previously promised to transition workers with 15 years of service into permanent roles. Current policy splits sanctioned posts evenly between existing contractual staff and direct new hires. Dkhar insists the company must also audit its total vacancy count. Records currently date back to the undivided Assam era, leaving the system outdated. Management must now complete a full staffing review and fill empty seats by the end of November.
