Shillong: Hasebinson Marwein and Marqueenless Ramsiej surged ahead to take the titles at the 7th Shillong 10K Run on Saturday. Hundreds of runners hit the pavement for the event. The Meghalaya State Olympic Association held the race to mark International Olympic Day.
Wanbok L Mawphlang and Junom Phawa grabbed second and third in the men’s division. Jidalin Tympuin and Maryqueen Pale took the silver and bronze spots for the women. The winners walked away with 5,000 rupees each. Runners placing second and third earned 3,000 and 2,000 rupees.
The race started after Indian long-distance runner Binningstar Lyngkhoi and international karateka Damang Syngkon flagged the crowd off. Officials also honored athletes over age 55 with special awards. The East Khasi Hills district administration and the Police Department helped run the show.
MSOA officials used the stage to push for the Sohra International Half Marathon. That event hits the road on September 4. As one official stated: "Registrations for the event will open on July 1."
