Manipur Marks 135 Years Since 1891 War

Imphal: The Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak gathered at Tengol, Khongjom, today to mark the 135th anniversary of the historic conflict. Attendees met at the Tengol Leikai Community Hall to honor those who died in the war.

The event featured a floral tribute known as Heitha-Leitha and the traditional offering of Langban Chara at the memorial. Participants held a silent moment to remember the martyrs and unsung heroes. Social activist Thingujam Oxford joined the proceedings as chief guest, while Justice Committee chairman Joychandra Konthoujam led the program.

Representatives from the Manipuri Bangladesh Youth Cultural Organisation, FPMC, Samram Gram Panchayat, and the Tengol Leikai Meira Paibi attended the memorial. Descendants of Major Heirang Khongjaba and Huirem Lerikhomba also stood among the crowd.

Konthoujam addressed the assembly, urging residents to embody the grit displayed by their ancestors. He noted that the current generation holds the burden of those sacrifices. "The people of Manipur must draw strength from the courage and determination shown by their forefathers in defending the land," Konthoujam stated.

He pushed for a united front to heal social divisions. Collective effort remains the only way to build a stable future for the region.
