Guwahati: Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University will launch four new programs starting July 2026. The University Grants Commission’s Distance Education Bureau cleared M.Sc. degrees in Physics and Chemistry, a B.Sc. in Mathematics, and a Master of Library and Information Science. This update makes the Guwahati school a multidisciplinary institution. It now aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 by covering Arts, Science, and Commerce.
Vice-Chancellor Rajendra Prasad Das shared the news at the Khanapara City Campus. He confirmed the school already teaches M.Sc. courses in Mathematics and Information Technology, plus MBA and Yoga programs. He noted, "The approval had been long awaited, as many aspiring learners, particularly in-service graduate science teachers across Assam, had been seeking opportunities to pursue postgraduate education through the ODL mode."
The university serves roughly one lakh students. That is 11 percent of all higher education enrollment in Assam. With these additions, the total academic list grows to 77 programs. Registrar Pranab Saikia added that the school is building a Science Laboratory and Skill Hub at the Rani campus to support the expansion.
The institution also earned a nod from the National Council for Vocational Education and Training. It stands as the first university in Northeast India to function as an Awarding and Assessment Body for skill courses. Officials already secured approval for a Solar Panel Installation course. They are currently waiting for a final decision on a Geriatric Care program.
