Shillong: Jaintia National Council members shut down the Eklavya Modern Residential School construction site in Kairang village on Monday. General secretary Wanshwa Suting led the surprise inspection. His team discovered hundreds of laborers from outside the state working without proper paperwork. Badri Rai Company manages the project. They failed to secure mandatory legal permits for the crew.
Suting pointed out specific violations. The workers lacked registration required by the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act of 2020. They also ignored the Employee Service Licence rules under the 2015 Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council laws. The site sits silent for now. The council halted the non-local workforce immediately while allowing locals to keep working.
Suting slammed the company for sidelining residents on a federally funded project. The school aims to provide hostels and skill training for local tribes. "The sad thing is that, during our inspection, we found that only non-tribals are working here," Suting remarked. He warned other firms against ignoring local job seekers. The JNC expects companies to hire residents when they are capable of doing the work.
