Jiribam Honors Student Activist Pebam Chitaranjan

Imphal: The Manipuri Students' Federation Jiribam District Committee held Students Martyrdom Day on Sunday at the RK Sanatombi Vidyalaya auditorium. Attendees gathered to honor the 22nd death anniversary of activist Pebam Chitaranjan. He died by self-immolation on August 15, 2004. He acted to protest the Armed Forces Special Powers Act of 1958.

Local leaders, students, youths, and civil society members paid floral tributes to Chitaranjan's portrait. The room fell silent for two minutes. Attendees reflected on his fight against the military act. Kh. Indikumar Singh, principal of Jiribam Higher Secondary School, spoke to the crowd. He called for democratic action against laws that hurt citizens. Referring to the legislation, he stated, "Many people had lost their lives amid protests and conflict surrounding such legislation."

Singh urged the youth to learn their rights and responsibilities. He wants students to push for peace in Manipur. The event featured several local figures as presidium members. These included Kh. Janaki Devi, Mutum Shyamkumar, Th. Priyadhasani Devi, and Th. Samananda Singh. They emphasized that Chitaranjan's struggle remains relevant for the next generation.
