Shillong: Heinrich Malan quit as Ireland head coach on Monday. He stepped down just 24 hours after his team secured a historic 2-0 T20 series victory against India in Belfast. The departure comes mid-contract, as Malan originally signed on until 2027.
Malan took the job in March 2022. He oversaw a golden era for Irish cricket, which included three consecutive T20 World Cup qualifications and the nation's first three Test match victories. The team also notched wins against Pakistan, South Africa, and the West Indies under his guidance.
He reflected on his exit in a formal statement. "It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community," Malan said.
Cricket Ireland officials framed the move as a strategic shift. They want a new coach in place before the August ODI series against Afghanistan. This change aims to prepare the squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup qualifiers. Graeme West, the board's high-performance director, noted that the decision was mutual. West praised Malan for building significant depth within the playing group during a difficult period for the program.
