Shillong: A two-day international meeting on organic farming wrapped up Saturday at the State Convention Centre in Shillong. The event brought together 400 policymakers and farmers from ten countries. They gathered to discuss how women are reshaping global food systems.
Organizers included the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture, alongside IFOAM Organics Asia and KfW Development Bank. Sessions centered on Meghalaya's matrilineal roots. Speakers pushed for gender-responsive policies and better global partnerships to help local growers.
Agriculture Secretary Isawanda Laloo addressed the closing crowd. She thanked Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma for backing the state's agriculture sector. Laloo noted the event allowed local leaders to share strategies with international peers. She said the conference provided a vital platform to learn from the experiences of women farmers worldwide.
State officials pledged to keep pushing for better market access. They view these international connections as a direct investment in the future of the regional farming community.
