Imphal: The Global Naga Forum (GNF) wants Manipur officials to cancel an FIR filed against activist Ambrose D. Kamei. Kamei works as an educator and musician in the state. He also campaigns for Naga rights. The forum sent a formal appeal to the Manipur Governor and the Chief Minister this Wednesday.
GNF convenor Chuba Ozukum and general secretary Lakpachui Siro signed the request. They argue the state must uphold the constitutional right to free speech. The forum claims authorities are focusing too narrowly on Kamei while ignoring other provocative voices in the region. Ethnic conflict in Manipur has led many people to post aggressive comments online. The group notes that these posts often target different communities, security forces, and government institutions.
The group finds the involvement of the Additional Director General of Police office troubling. They suggest this indicates a lack of consistency. The GNF warned that picking and choosing who to prosecute breeds deeper mistrust between communities. They stated: "The government's approach towards dissent should help build public confidence rather than contribute to further alienation."
The forum maintains that social media posts should not automatically trigger criminal charges. They urged the government to act with restraint during these tense times. Fairness is at stake. The organization believes that targeting one individual while ignoring similar acts by others creates a perception of bias. They want the Governor and Chief Minister to examine the case personally to ensure the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of their social standing or ethnicity.
