Shillong: The Garo Students Union joined forces with residents from five villages on Monday to push for the Karukkol-Siju-Dabalgre road. They want the Public Works Department to ignore complaints from Emangre village and get to work now. Construction stalled before it started. The group sent a memorandum to the South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner demanding he reject any requests to move the route.
Locals say the road is vital for the area. They believe it will boost eco-tourism and end years of neglect. The union claims that a small group is trying to hold the project hostage. They view these complaints as a direct attack on regional progress. "We view any further administrative delay caused by selective parochial interests as a direct injustice to our people," the GSU stated.
Contractors still lack a formal work order. The GSU wants the government to stop the red tape and sign the papers. They insist the original plans remain unchanged to ensure the project moves ahead without more excuses. The union expects the PWD to monitor the site closely to ensure the builders follow eco-friendly guidelines. The people are waiting for machines to hit the dirt.
