Imphal: The Department of Physics at G.P. Women’s College in Imphal observed Hiroshima Day 2026 today at the college library hall. Faculty and students gathered to examine the grim legacy of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War.
Principal Prof. L. Rajen Singh detailed the timeline of the attacks. He noted that the Little Boy bomb hit Hiroshima on August 6, while the more powerful Fat Man struck Nagasaki three days later. Singh explained that despite the higher yield of the second weapon, the Hiroshima bombing resulted in a higher casualty count. He said, "The explosions generated extremely high temperatures at their core and released immense destructive energy, causing widespread devastation, loss of lives and long-term environmental and health impacts."
The event explored the duality of nuclear technology. Speakers weighed its use in electricity generation against the catastrophic suffering caused by nuclear warfare. Physics Department head L. Tamphasana Devi called for a world free of nuclear weapons. IQAC coordinator Prof. Md. Baharuddin Shah emphasized the necessity of public awareness regarding these dangers.
The college screened a documentary and handed out prizes for quiz and slogan writing contests. Notable attendees included K. Sanaton Sharma, head of the chemistry department, and physics faculty members Dr. Pukhrambam Sushma Devi and Dr. Thoudam Vilip Singh.
