Shillong: Forest officials dismantled four illegal sawmills across Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills. The raids hit the Chibinang-Bolarbita and Selsella sectors hard. Teams moved in on June 23 and June 29 to break up the operations.

The Office of the Range Forest Officer at Hollaidonga led the charge. They acted on intelligence reports about clandestine mills hiding under makeshift sheds. Personnel tore down heavy-duty bandsaw assemblies and driving wheels.

Authorities seized three complete sawmill sets, electric motors, and stacks of illicit logs. Divisional Forest Officer Rupankar K. Marak confirmed the raids destroyed the heart of these local timber rackets.

The department remains on the hunt for more illicit sites. Officials warned that future enforcement drives are already in the works. They promised to hold those responsible for the destruction of forest resources accountable, stating, "strict legal action will continue against individuals and groups found operating illegal sawmills or engaging in unlawful timber-related activities."
