Guwahati: A fast-moving fire leveled four houses in the Binakandi Ghat area of Assam's Cachar district on August 25. The blaze ignited around 8.30 am inside the Lakhimpur subdivision. Smoke poured from a structure, catching the attention of locals and passers-by. They rushed to stop the flames. The fire spread anyway. It jumped to three neighboring homes before responders arrived.
Police and fire teams from the Lakhimpur station fought the blaze for a long time. They finally managed to kill the fire. The inferno turned furniture, documents, and personal belongings into ash. The owners, identified as Premjit Singh, Mukesh Singh, Dilip Singh, and Manna Das, lost nearly everything they owned. The families estimate their total property loss at Rs 2 crore.
Authorities are still looking for the spark. While the cause remains unconfirmed, residents suspect an electrical fault. "The affected families suspect that an electrical short circuit involving an inverter may have caused the fire," one source reported. The investigation remains open. Distraught locals are now calling on Lakhimpur MLA and minister Kaushik Rai to step in and provide state financial aid for the victims.
