Shillong: Delhi Police detained over 150 people on Friday to break up the Lehra Do Tiranga march. Officers picked up Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke and All India Students Association chief Neha Bora. The arrests occurred as supporters gathered for a protest at Connaught Place.
Police arrived at Dipke’s Jhandewalan home shortly before the 5 pm start time. They served two notices. One blocked him from organizing or joining any rally near Connaught Place. Officials cited risks of a stampede, traffic snarls, and threats to public order. A Special Executive Magistrate also reminded Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka of bond conditions from their October 10 custody. Police stated the notices followed Dipke's online calls for an illegal assembly.
Dipke headed to Jafarpur Kalan police station after his detention. Officers grabbed Bora at Mandi House. Scuffles broke out between crowds, media, and police. Authorities had already denied the CJP permission to march under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar surveyed the scene as 6,000 police and 220 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces locked down the area. Central Park sat empty.
The New Delhi Municipal Council shut the park through Saturday. A tear-gas truck and a Vajra vehicle waited nearby. Rapid Action Force troops held their positions inside the perimeter. While some smaller groups walked under watch, the main protest failed. As police locked the gates, one officer noted, "Permission for the CJP march had already been refused under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita."
